Deafening Silence Sara B. 05/08 Mulder sat at his desk behind his computer. To anyone paying
attention they would think he was busy doing research but in reality he was busy trying to understand what was going on with
Scully. They’d had a furious fight three days earlier. They’d both said some things that were below
the belt and completely unfounded but the damage was done and he wanted to move beyond it. The problem was that this
time it seemed that Scully wanted to wallow in the emotional mess the fight had created. It had started out as typical
difference of opinion and soon it became a disagreement that quickly escalated to an all out battle the likes they’d
never experienced before. Since then it had only been the barest of communication between them. And then only
when absolutely unavoidable; relying on Sticky Notes to relay any questions or comments. The
silence of the basement office was deafening. Mulder had suffered two complete days of the tension and silence
and he decided to break it now. He got up and he noticed her look at him as he approached her chair and kneeled down. “Scully,
I know you are still mad but we need to get over this, to move beyond,” she placed a finger on his mouth to stop him
from saying anything more. “Not anger, Mulder, embarrassment.” Her head tilted forward and he couldn’t
see her eyes. He gently placed a finger under her chin and pulled her face up. “Embarrassment, why?” “Mulder,
the things I said to you, about you. None of it was true, I don’t think of you in that way. Please believe
me when I tell you I was just lashing out.” Mulder leaned back on his heels. A slow smile crept on his face
and his eyes lit up. “Scully, do you remember the things I said to and about you?” She thought for a
moment, “no, I don’t.” “I don’t remember what you said either. Why don’t we just
forget it?” “No, Mulder, I don’t want to just forget it. I need to tell you something, it has to
do with that fight. Or at least I think it does.” He pulled over a chair and they sat knees to knees.
“Tell me, Scully.” “Mulder, the tension between us has been building for quite some time. It’s
gotten so strong it’s almost visible. I don’t know how it happened but that fight just got out of hand because
of all that tension.” Mulder was getting very worried about what she was about to tell him and it must have shown
on his face. “Mulder, no! I’m not leaving or even taking a vacation but after this conversation you
just might want me to.” “You’re scaring me here, Scully. Please just tell me what the tension between
us had to do with that fight?” Scully looked at him and began to say something but nothing came out. She started
again and again nothing was said. “Oh, to hell with it!” Suddenly she was out of her chair, on her knees in front of him, and pulling his head to hers. Mulder
was so stunned he did not react to her kiss until she began to move away. Without thought his arms wrapped around her
and wouldn’t let her back away. He pulled her into his lap and they remained in the heated embrace until the phone
chimed and brought them back from wherever they’d gone to. Mulder answered the phone and disposed of the caller quickly.
“Agent Scully, I think we should continue this conversation over dinner perhaps?” He grabbed his coat waiting
for her response. Scully was also donning her coat, “I am in complete agreement with that, Agent Mulder.” Mulder
stumbled and turned to her, “could I get that on tape, Scully? It isn’t often you say something like that.” Her
eyes narrowed and in a low husky whisper she said, “and maybe I’ll let you video it.” “I think
I just got very turned on, Scully.” “I know I did, Mulder.” End
