The
New Assignment

Dana
Scully left Blevins’ office, not knowing what to think. This assignment
had all the earmarks of a set-up. She knew that her superiors at Quantico were less than thrilled that their best Forensic Pathology instructor requested a field position
and she wouldn’t put it past any of them to put her in this position.
Blevins
had denied it when she’d asked if they wanted her to discredit Agent Mulder but the mission laid out to her seemed pretty
clear. They wanted Mulder back profiling and they wanted her to provide the match
to ignite the flame to burn him. If anyone was that naïve as to think that Dana
Katherine Scully would just capitulate they were fools.
Oh,
she would do her job to the letter. She would write reports detailing her experiences
with Agent Mulder but she would not slant those reports to meet anyone’s agenda; not Blevins’ and not Mulder’s.
She
reached the elevators but changed her mind before boarding. Dana turned and headed
toward the library; she had some investigating to do.
Dana
couldn’t believe that Mulder’s office was actually in the basement. He’d
been a star profiler with a solve rate that was nearly unbelievable. He had awards
and commendations up the yin-yang so it just didn’t make sense that they’d stuffed him down where the ‘sun
don’t shine.’ Heck, his reputation was such that he’d been
able to convince the ‘powers that be’ that his little pet project was worth creating his own division to investigate.
Her
investigation of her new partner had been hurried but she’d been able to get a better feel for the man she was about
to meet than the bits and pieces from the rumor mill and FBI legends. From what
she’d been able to ascertain, Fox Mulder was not only a genius he was very intuitive.
He had an impressive record and he seemed to have been involved in a large number of high profile cases. She also noticed that many times the credit was given to him grudgingly.
This made her think that there was something about Agent Mulder that just pissed people off. It might just be as simple as jealousy but she had a suspicion he might do it on purpose. Mulder’s profile showed that he was a loner. He’d
had a smattering of partners but he seemed to work mostly alone. She could almost
see his school progress reports, ‘Fox does not work well with others.’ Well
that was something they would have in common. Her school progress reports always
said something similar. Growing up moving from base to base she’d long
ago learned not to get too attached to people, so in her own way she was a loner too.
‘Can two loners learn to get along and work together and form a successful partnership?’
A
man crossed her path as she made progress down the hall. He looked familiar;
she thought he was one of the agents she’d seen on her way to Blevins’ office.
He looked embarrassed at being seen by her. Like he was leery of being
caught consulting with the basement pariah. If he’d been a weasel she would
have described his movements as ‘scurrying.’
Dana
reached the door and read the name ‘Fox W. Mulder.’ ‘Okay Dana
it’s time to meet your destiny.’

Waiting
For His Partner
Sara
B. 12/05
Mulder
had been called in to Blevins’ office two days earlier and was told that he would be getting a partner. He was given her personnel file since ‘technically’ he was the division head. Wow, he’d been so impressed; he now was in a position to lord it over one person. Whoopee!
Blevins
had said all the right things; Dana Scully was trained in hard sciences and that would help him legitimize his investigations. Blah, blah, blah. Mulder knew the real
score; they wanted him back from chasing paranormal monsters to chasing human ones.
Dana Scully was a spy, pure and simple and she was being assigned to the X-Files to provide the fuel to shut them down.
He’d
had two days to prepare for Mata Hari to arrive. The file he’d been given
was not the complete one kept in personnel so it didn’t contain her picture but he could almost draw the woman they
would send. She would be tall, 5’8” to 5’10. She would have dark flowing hair and her face would be attractive, not a conventional beauty but in an
exotic sort of way. She’d have dark, smoldering eyes. There were enough people who knew what he liked and desired.
Mulder
had pulled in a few favors and had gotten the skinny on Dana Scully. She was
the third child out of four born to Margaret and William Scully. Margaret was
a stay at home mom and William Scully was a Captain in the US Navy, currently posted at Norfolk until his retirement later this
year. Her school records indicate that she was brilliant but socially closed
off. She was a loner, which was something he could empathize with. Smart people often had trouble being social; add that they moved quite often only added to her isolation.
Her
college and med school grades were second to none. She’d been highly sought
after for the internship programs throughout the country which made him curious as to why she ended up with the FBI.
Her
choices were geared toward typically male oriented fields so he suspected that she was trying to impress the father who had
been absent for about half her life. Mulder suspected she would have been a tomboy.
Mulder
had been able to obtain a copy of her senior thesis and he was impressed. Not
only had she tackled the theories of the father of Physics, she’d posed some very radical theories of her own. He hadn’t understood much of what she wrote but he had not been able to put
it down. In fact he’d read it through twice.
Mulder
surveyed his trap. Slide projector in place.
Slides on the light box, he knew which ones he wanted but he wanted to make a show of putting the chosen slides in
the carousel. Trina had called to let him know that his prey had just left Blevins
and should be on her way. One last look and he was satisfied.
Al
Parker just left Mulder’s office; slithered out was more like it, Mulder thought.
It had been two hours since he’d gotten the heads up from Trina and Scully had yet to make an appearance. Al showed up about an hour or so earlier for consult.
Mulder was grateful for the distraction. Now Al was gone and all he had
to do was wait, not something he was good at.
Mulder
was startled out of his reverie by a knock; show time! “Sorry, nobody down
here but the FBI’s most unwanted.”
